Swept -- Lillian , good friend of 60x365, made final suggestion for a piece built from wind sounds. It's more sliced than I imagined it would be when I started, but that happens here sometimes.

Big Feet Birthday -- Today is my birthday. To celebrate I've dug up a recording that my uncle made for me on the occasion of my thirteenth birthday (twenty years ago...). As you will hear, he was very sensitive during my awkward teenage years :-)

Today is also my second-to-last danceaday.com collaboration with Boris Willis. Be sure to check out his video today, he managed to unearth an old(ish) photo of me from his personal archive...

Happy Birthday Me!

February 29, 2008 (Leap Day)

There is no new 60-second piece for today. If there was this project would need to be called 60x366, which it's not.

Instead I am posting two other pieces today, each of which is built from earlier one-minute postings. The archives of 60x365 have become a kind of menu that I can use for collaborations and commissions. These pieces were each created for specific performances, using the 60x365 archives as a source for material.

First is a piece called Twine [listen]. I made it for dancer/choreographer Kristin Hapke using five earlier pieces: Simple Sin(e) 1, Simple Sin(e) 2, Stasis, Glass Canon, and Here, I'll Play It Again.

The second piece is called Creamy Pink Thrill [listen]. It started as Boop Boop Beep and evolved into a Gameboy performance piece.

Enjoy.

Are Many -- Day 2 of the 2008 Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts is beginning. Last night I got to hear several great bands perform, including Beatrix*Jar. They describe their work as "fuzzy sound collage" and it consists of tight beats layered with samples and circuit bent instruments. After the show I picked up one of their CD's. This morning I remixed a few measures from their Ready to Rock track for your listening pleasure. Enjoy.

(If you like this music, there's more on their siteÔø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡http://beatrixjar.com/Ôø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡and on their myspace profileÔø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡http://www.myspace.com/beatrixjars)

Blue is this week's danceaday.com collaboration with Boris Willis, continuing his series of dances for Black History Month. For today I decided to pay homage to the blues, that African-American form that is a cornerstone of our culture. This piece is a re-examination of a piano composition I composed several years ago, itself a re-examination of the blues. Enjoy.

Man-Bull is a one minute variation on a theme of Unsafe Bull's Jay C. Batzner. He made this piece using samples from a Mancala game back in January and has been creating new variations ever since. Today he sent out this email challenge:
You may or may not know this, but I have a weekly podcast in which I compose a new electroacoustic piece. I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary (end of February) and I was hoping to enlist your help.

While I have been doing self-contained weekly compositions, over the past few weeks I've started a "theme and variations" piece based on sounds from a mancala game board. Each week I'm writing a new variation and eventually I'll stop. Anyhow, I was hoping to get any and all of you to write "guest variations" to be plugged in to celebrate my year of podcasting.

My anniversary for the podcast is February 28. If you'd like, please go over to my website (http://thecollected.org/batzner) and check out the Mancala Samples page. Download all the files you want, make something out of them, and send that variation to me.

Today's is the first of two variations I plan to make. Tune in tomorrow for Bull-Man.

One Inch:1 is a remix of the Nine Inch Nails song The Great Destroyer. The band has released an authorized remix of their Year Zero album, which includes a bonus disc containing all of the individual studio tracks from the original album. Anyone who wants to can use these files to make their own NIN remixes. To honor this artistic generosity, I plan to make several one-minute remixes here. Enjoy.
